A physical count establishes what is actually present at a point in time. Reconciliation compares that reality with the records the business has been using.
The difference can come from receiving errors, unrecorded movement, returns, discounts, damaged stock, adjustments, unit-of-measure problems, shrinkage or poor master data.
Correcting a quantity may make today’s report look clean. If the workflow that created the variance stays unchanged, the same problem can return.
Good operations make the business easier to understand, not harder.
What to do next
Map the workflow, identify where information or control breaks down, define ownership and only then decide whether the answer is a process change, a control, a system or some combination of the three.
